On Sunday, March 2 at 4 p.m., the Desert Hills Community School of Music (DHCSM) Saxophone Ensemble will proudly present “An Afternoon at the Oscars,” a concert celebrating award-winning music from movies released throughout the past 100 years. Featuring DHCSM’s youth quartet, adult quartet and the Fountain Hills Saxophone Quartet in addition to the full ensemble of soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, this show is free and open to the public. The performance will be held on the campus of Desert Hills Presbyterian Church (34605 N. Tom Darlington Road, Scottsdale, Ariz. 85266) just hours before the 2025 Academy Awards, allowing attendees to hear the music of past Award winners prior to the announcement of this year’s winners.
Led by Jeffrey Anthony, who holds a master’s degree in saxophone performance from Arizona State University, the DHCSM Saxophone Ensemble welcomes saxophonists of all ages – the group has had players aged 11 to 84! The ensemble offers a wonderful opportunity for current saxophonists, as well as those who have not played in years and would like to resume, to enhance their skills while performing fun music with other saxophone players from across the Valley.
“An Afternoon at the Oscars” is the grand finale of the Saxophone Ensemble’s Spring 2025 season, which began rehearsals in January. Other ensembles at DHCSM include the Flute Choir and Community Band, which invite musicians of diverse ages and skill levels to practice their instruments in a positive and supportive environment.
