Sample some authentic mexican food. Arizona's salsa trail runs through friendly Safford, where there are more than a dozen mexican restaurants, a family-owned tortilla factory, and a chile farm to fire up your taste buds.
Come in September as SalsaFest takes over the town.
In Safford, the same modest cafés have been churning out excellent, home-style Mexican food for decades. If you need a surefire conversation starter, just ask a local to name his or her favorite haunt; then get ready to do some mouthwatering research.
Once you’ve filled your belly, there are lots of ways to work off the calories in this high-desert hometown. From mid-May through October, you can take a guided tour to Mount Graham International Observatory, on the highest point in the Pinaleno Mountains. At Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, Bonita Creek is home to frogs, javelinas, black bears, and more than 140 birds – bring your binoculars and a picnic lunch! And, surprise, you can also reserve a float trip on the Gila River, fish at Riggs Lake, and take a dip in the natural mineral springs of Roper Lake State Park. Stay awhile. The camping in Graham County is outstanding.
Spend the night under the Southern Arizona stars at lakeside cabins or campsites near Safford.
This protected 19,410 acres of Eden is perfect for primitive, adventure-based recreation like horseback riding, hiking, camping and hunting.
Hike off-trail in Gila Box Riparian NCA, a beautiful rugged territory located 30 miles northwest of Safford, Arizona.
