Becker Lake Wildlife Area

Love to be outdoors? Visit Becker Lake Wildlife Area, Arizona. Categorized as a trophy Rainbow Trout lake, experience year-round fishing and relax on the water.

Love to be outdoors? Then the 622-acre Becker Lake Wildlife Area is definitely for you. Located in east-central Arizona within the Springerville city limits, this is the place to be for spotting waterfowl and shorebirds, or wildlife like antelope and prairie dogs. Fun fact: wintering bald eagles are often spotted in the area.

But Becker Lake is more than just a beautiful body of water. The department added 291 acres of adjacent land to the wildlife area in 2002, to protect and improve the stream and riparian habitat along the Little Colorado River. That addition means that this will be a favorite for generations to come.

History & Nature

Created in 1880 through the construction of a dam on the Little Colorado River, Becker Lake is now one of the oldest reservoirs in the White Mountains. Measuring approximately 100 surface-acres, there’s plenty of room to enjoy a quiet afternoon on the water.

Things To Do

This is also an incredible spot for year-round fishing, since Becker Lake is categorized as a trophy Rainbow Trout lake. The lake is managed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department as a “Blue Ribbon” fishery, which means that it’s stocked with rainbow trout twice a year. Or, you might even catch brown trout that migrates from the Little Colorado River. Take out a boat or float tube for the best fishing.
