Hawley Lake
Wind along the Mogollon Rim on Highway 260 to reach this cool respite tucked away on White Mountain Apache tribal lands.
Clear mountain lakes surrounded by towering pine forests is not the setting most visitors envision when planning a trip to Arizona. Along the Mogollon Rim in Northern Arizona, however, lake life is a way of life. Surrounded by Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, the remote area sits above 8,000 feet and sees more free-range cattle and wild horses than people. Hawley Lake is especially popular in the warmer months when sailing, canoeing and kayaking invite outdoor adventurers to get on the water.
Water Sports
Many visitors strap paddle boats to their roofs when heading to this scenic outdoor playground. Visitors can also rent kayaks and canoes at Hawley Lake Store, a little gem that sells fishing and camping supplies near a boat dock. Small boats with electric motors are allowed but most visitors prefer people-powered watercrafts that preserve the no-noise zone. Get a fishing permit at the lake store and cast a line for Apache trout plus brown, brook, cutthroat and rainbow trout. In winter, visitors might even witness an Arizona phenomenon: ice fishing when the lake freezes over.
Area Attractions
Lake Hawley is located on White Mountain Apache tribal lands, which feature many tribal enterprises open to visitors. From the lake, head south to tour Fort Apache Historic Park, a testament to the tribe’s resiliency. Head north to enjoy the mountain towns of Pinetop-Lakeside and the gaming action at Hon-Dah Resort Casino. Sunrise Park Resort buzzes with activity in the winter months, with three peaks for alpine skiing featuring technical runs for experienced skiers and intermediate runs for beginners.
Mountain Camping
Hawley Lake Campground has nearly 100 tent and RV sites and more than 60 cabins create a little village between Hawley Lake and Earl Park Lake. Visitors can choose from a tiny cabin for solo adventures to a full house large enough to accommodate two families. Hawley Lake Store & Brown Trout Cafe nearby adds just enough creature comfort to this mountain camping experience. Still too rustic? The mountain charmers Pinetop-Lakeside are just a few minutes north and have hotels including the luxury lodge at Hon-Dah Resort Casino.
