Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park
See where justice was served in one of the Wild West’s most infamous towns.
Start a daytrip to Tombstone at the two-story red brick Victorian built in 1882 that once housed the sheriff’s office, jail and courtrooms of Cochise County. Today, the historic site is a museum filled with artifacts that reveal the struggles between those who tried to tame the territory and those intent on keeping the area lawless. See where justice was ultimately served in this Old West outpost, then stroll Tombstone’s streets to get the rest of the story.
Tour the Museum
The former courthouse features displays that chronicle Tombstone’s heyday as a frontier mining town. See a reproduction of the courtroom and sheriff’s office, plus a tax license for operating a brothel and an invitation to a hanging. Outside, a replica of the gallows where convicts were hanged offers a grim reminder of Western justice. Exhibits throughout the museum capture the stories of the miners, ranchers and pioneers who settled the rugged boom town.
Explore Tombstone
Tombstone locals and businesses go all-in to present a slice of life from this 1880s frontier town. Daily re-enactments of the shootout between the Earps and Clantons at O.K. Corral draw large crowds of onlookers. After the shootout, visitors stroll wood-plank sidewalks and interact with actors in period garb while touring Tombstone’s other infamous sites. Visitors like to read the odd headstones at Boot Hill Cemetery, the final resting place of many of the town’s early pioneers. Big Nose Kate’s Saloon and Bird Cage Theatre are popular stops to see the frozen-in-time brothel and dance hall where miners spent much of their free time. Visitors today can count the bullet holes in the walls.
Visit Bisbee
Visitors who make the drive to this remote corner of Arizona often continue south 20 miles farther to see one of the state’s most colorful mining towns. Bisbee preserves its Wild West boom town vibes in its historic storefronts and the grand hotel overlooking the city. Go underground to tour the former mine shafts, stay the night in a charming bed and breakfast or the historic Copper Queen Hotel and find a souvenir in the town’s many antique shops and art galleries.
