Saguaro Lake

On the outskirts of the Phoenix metro area, discover a cool oasis in Tonto National Forest.

Just off Highway 87 northeast of the Phoenix metro, visitors head to this refreshing lake surrounded by saguaro-studded banks and towering canyon walls. With only 22 miles of shoreline, this little desert gem packs a big punch with water activities, iconic tour options and a marina with a restaurant, gift shop and wine bar. A historic guest ranch downriver shuttles guests to epic adventures on Saguaro Lake and the Salt River.

A Day at the Beach

Families with kids in tow who want to cool off in the water head to the east end of the lake for the no-wake zone at Butcher Jones Beach. The swimming area here is on a mellow and safe section of the lake shaded by mesquite groves, the perfect backdrop for family picnics surrounded by natural wonders. The beauty of the Sonoran Desert surrounds this cool respite where hikers enjoy a 6-mile out-and-back hike in Tonto National Forest and anglers find calm waters to fish for resident bass, walleye, catfish and rainbow trout.

Desert Belle Cruises

Two paved boat launches at Saguaro Lake Marina get motorized boats on the water. Also launching from the marina, Desert Belle Cruises offers lake tours aboard double-decker cruisers. The narrated tours take a deep dive into the history, geology and wildlife in the area and feature live music, plus Arizona-grown wines and local craft beer. Depending on the time of year, visitors can take in the desert’s beauty from the open-air upper deck or seek air-conditioned comfort down below.

Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch

For a luxurious stay in this rugged area, Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch offers 20 rental cabins near the banks of the Salt River. This gateway to Saguaro Lake features miles of trails that take mountain bikers and UTV riders into the desert backcountry. The ranch also has a horse stable and takes visitors on guided horseback tours that reach a ridge overlooking Saguaro Lake. Other tour options include white-water rafting trips and mellow tube floats down the Salt River. Many visitors are content relaxing on the banks of the river and watching for the Salt River’s resident wild horses to pass by.
